About Griffins

Griffin sign

With the head, wings and front quarters of an eagle and the body and hind quarters of a lion, the griffin is a mythological creature that has been subject of centuries of artists' renderings. It appears most of the griffins shown here are female -- male griffins have no wings. The pub contains many depictions of griffins, and links are provided to view and learn more about them. The pub uses the current English spelling for the creature's name, but among its more traditional spellings are gryphon and griffon.

Protoceratops stamp
Long before griffins evolved, there was a similar animal, now referred to as Protoceratops, shown on this postage stamp. Protoceratops was very griffin-like, with adults reaching six to eight feet in length. The fossil record indicates that neither gender of Protoceratops possessed wings.
